FAQS

We Thought You Might Be Wondering...

Q: At what age should my kiddo be seen by an orthodontist?

The American Academy of Orthodontics recommends age 7 for the first ortho checkup. This is when the first adult teeth begin to erupt and jaw issues can become apparent. Proactively seeing an orthodontist can prevent future issues and more extensive treatment down the road. While we do not recommend treatment for all young children, we monitor your child in our complimentary growth guidance program to ensure we don’t miss anything! We want to be ready for treatment at the exact right time for your kiddo!

Q: Why an orthodontist and not my general dentist?

Orthodontists are dental specialists who have two to three years of additional training post-dental school to be able to correctly diagnose and treat dental and skeletal irregularities. Dr. Shannon has provided orthodontic treatment to thousands of patients and has mastered his craft. Given the high level of specialization necessary to provide proper treatment, we caution against going to a general dentist who only does a few orthodontic cases per year.

Q: Adults??

Yasssss! We have seriously convenient and efficient options for adults. If you want straight teeth, there’s no reason not to do it!

Q: Why is it important?

Orthodontic treatment is important not only for how your smile looks, but bite issues and crooked teeth can lead to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces. This can cause a lot of issues: cavities, fractured teeth, difficulty chewing, speech issues, and excessive stress on supporting bone and gum tissues. These issues will lead to more extensive dental restorations later in life.

Q: How often will I need to come in the office?

On average, about every 8-10 weeks. Depending on your treatment, you will have a combination of in-office and virtual appointments to make your treatment more convenient and efficient for you!

Q: Can clear aligners do what braces can??

Well yes they can! With the newest technology in clear aligner therapy, they are just as effective (if not more) as traditional braces. Don’t let anyone tell you you’re not a clear aligner candidate… because in this office, you are!

Q: What is Growth Guidance?

Some kiddos are not quite ready for treatment. Our complimentary Growth Guidance program allows Dr. Shannon to periodically check in and monitor tooth eruption and jaw growth to ensure we start treatment at the ideal time for each child’s body. Some kids will also need growth breaks in between phases of treatment, in which case they will have a Growth Guidance visit.
